Bronsted-Lowry Acid and Base
- The Bronsted-Lowry theory, a theory which was proposed and formulated by Johannes Nicolaus Bronsted and Thomas Martin Lowry. One of the main concept of this theory is that when an acid and a base reacts with one another, the acid forms a conjugate base and the base forms its conjugate acid.
Example:
The bond between the Oxygen and one of the Hydrogen ion is split. It is called as Homolytic Bond Breaking (the two electrons in a cleaved covalent bond are divided equally between the products; occurs in dissimilar species)
Then, the Hydrogen ion that were splitted, will be moved to the base in the reaction, the transferring of the hydrogen ion is called ‘Electrophilic Attack’.
-The Bronsted Lowry Base (BLB) is the NH3, because it is the one that accepts proton.
-The Bronsted Lowry Acid (BLA) is the NH4+, because it is the one that donates proton.
-The conjugate acid is NH4+, because of the reception of ion by the base or it is the base that has a hydrogen ion added to it.
-The conjugate base is the OH-, because it is form by the removal of the proton from an acid.
