Alcohols

  • Alcohol is an organic compound that is a colorless flammable liquid with a strong smell, and is used mainly as a disinfectant. It can also be used in some medicines and products such as liquors.

 

  • Alcohol has only one oxygen. It is formed when a hydroxyl group (OH) is substituted for a hydrogen atom in a hydrocarbon.It can be classified as first degree (1°), second degree (2°) or third degree (3°). Alcohols are also named as “alkanols”.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

  • 1° alcohols are also called primary alcohols. It is when only one alkyl group is bonded to the carbon atom. An example is ethyl alcohol.
